Review: Western Digital My Passport 2TB

External storage has become more commonplace nowadays, but consumers always had to choose between 3.5-inch drives which offer more in capacity but requires an external power source, or a 2.5-inch solution, which gets rid of the power brick, but you get lesser storage in return. In review is Western Digital’s new external drive that offers huge storage capacity without compromising portability. Enter the WD My Passport 2TB.

The WD My Passport line of products consist of 2.5-inch hard drives encased in an enclosure. These smaller drives give you the peace of mind that you can connect your drive to any computer with a USB port. This particular unit, as per Western Digital’s announcement not too long ago, offers 2TB worth of storage, like mentioned. The product comes in a variety of colours, for those who are a bit more style-conscious with their portable drives. Like a lot of recent external drives, the drive is compatible with USB 3.0, so no long waiting times when transferring your soap operas. The drive does feel weightier and denser compared to the 500GB portable drive I’m carrying though, but it does feel sturdy.

How does the new drive perform? Rather well, judging by the scores. Plugging the Passport to a vacant USB 3.0 port unleashed its potential, with read and write scores exceeding 110MB/s in CrystalDiskMark. As a comparison, USB 2.0 drives only achieve half that speed, at best. So if you want to transfer your files faster, it’s best that you connect this to a USB 3.0 port.

The results from ATTO tally with the CDM results, with read/write scores approaching 120MB/s on the benchmark.

NASPT scores show that you can also access your files from the My Passport 2TB without major speedbumps, as seen from the HD Video Playback and its variants. This means that you can use this as a portable media drive, to overcome the rather limited space on your notebook.

All in all, the WD My Passport 2TB is a great portable drive that offers the best in capacity and portability.
