Intel® Easy Steps Program extends ICT education to rural communities

Kuala Lumpur, April 19, 2011 – Intel Malaysia and MSD Digital Intelligence Sdn Bhd today announced a collaborative MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) agreement to introduce the Intel Easy Steps Program in the 168 Community Broadband Centers (CBCs) nationwide.

The Intel Easy Steps Program is a community education offering for adult and youth learners with little or no experience with computers, and who are in need of basic technology skills. This global program is designed specifically to help accelerate access to technology and also introduce effective ways for youth and adults to learn how to use technology to increase and improve opportunities for education, commerce, healthcare, and communication.

“Intel and MSD Digital Intelligence share a mutual desire to unite and empower communities via the transfer of ICT skills and knowledge. The deployment of the Intel Easy Steps Program is aligned with the Malaysian government’s agenda to drive connectivity, increase awareness of ICT, and promote its usage and benefits amongst the underserved communities,” said Prakash Mallya, Country Manager, Sales and Marketing, Intel Malaysia.

According to a study done by PIKOM recently, “ICT Strategic Review 2010/11 E-commerce for Global Reach”, it was discovered that the main deterrent to the use of PCs and the Internet among rural folks is due to their lack of knowledge.

“This collaboration underlines Intel’s commitment as a corporate citizen to provide learning opportunities for Malaysians to acquire ICT skills that enable them to participate in Malaysia’s continuing growth and development,” Prakash Mallya continued.

MSD Digital Intelligence currently manages 168 CBCs nationwide, and part of its role is to provide solutions and services at the CBCs which include managing of ICT training. The company is confident that the introduction of the Intel Easy Steps Program will enhance its existing educational offerings.

“Our review of the Intel Easy Steps Program showed that the approach and teaching methodology together with the content to be most suitable for the audience in the rural communities. We are confident that it will be well received,” said Abdul Jalil bin Mohamed, Director, MSD Digital Intelligence. He further explained that the program will be delivered via workshops conducted in Bahasa Malaysia.

Intel Malaysia will undertake to provide the services of a Senior Trainer to conduct a Train-the-Trainer session for the CBC managers and assistant managers that have been selected by MSD Digital Intelligence. Currently, these managers and assistant managers are already conducting training at their respective centers for basic computer knowledge.
